The people who truly love you and love who you are will never try to change you into something that you’re not. They won’t try to pressure you into doing things that you’re not comfortable doing. They will always try to accommodate you and help you figure things out if you need help.
True friends will be there when you need it, not only when they need something. You can’t help everyone, and sometimes people might not want to be helped, but you shouldn’t constantly be going out of your way to help a friend if that’s all they ever ask of you. Friendships, relationships—they all go two ways. You’re there for them, and they’re there for you; it shouldn’t be a one-way street.
It can be easy to feel pressured into helping out a friend whenever they come to you for assistance, but if that’s all that relationship has become, it’s now more of a liability on your end. If someone is only coming to you when they need something, that’s not a friendship anymore; that’s business.
Any friendship or relationship that you have with someone should always be mutually beneficial. You should both enjoy each other’s company, want to spend time with one another, and help one another if and when the time comes. One person shouldn’t be doing all of the heavy lifting; it should be an equal share of responsibility.
I hate to say it, but people will always show their true colors when hard times fall. They will either stick with you to the end and help you out, or they will abandon you to fulfill their own wants and needs. A true friend will not abandon you in your time of need, but they will be there for you and help support you. Hold on to those true friends; it’s not often you find them in this life.
