Welcome to the fourth month of the year! April is finally upon us, and with it comes the promise of warmer weather, blooming flowers, and spring air all around. Fun fact about April: it actually gets its name from the Latin word aperio, which means “to open” or “to bud.” The first day of April, of course, is April Fools’ Day, so expect a few pranks here and there. We’re not really sure how April Fools’ Day got its start, but there are a few theories. Some say it goes back to ancient Rome and a festival held at the end of March called Hilaria, which was when people would dress in costume and mock others.
Others, however, believe that it started in the 16th century—in France, to be specific. Charles IX, at the time, declared that the new year would be held on January 1st. The new year had been celebrated around Easter before this. With the coming of spring and all, it made sense for the new year to start around the time that the Earth wakes up. Problems arose when some people were a little slow to catch on to the change, so those people quickly became the target of jokes and pranks. Being called All Fools’ Day as well, it could have been a jab at All Saints Day, or All Souls Day.
The timing of April Fools’ Day is also rather close to the Vernal Equinox. Mother Nature likes to play pranks herself when it comes to the weather around this time of year: cold temperatures one day, beach weather the next, a possible blizzard accompanied by record high temperatures. You never know what the weather has in store this time of year! Speaking of Mother Nature, Earth Day also takes place this year, on April 22nd. The first Earth Day was held on the same day in 1970, when people gathered to protest toxic drinking water, air pollution, and the dangerous effects of pesticides. Earth Day is not only a day to raise awareness about the dangers of pollution or GMOs, but also to celebrate our planet for everything that it is and does for us. Many people go out this day to clean up litter and plant trees or flowers for our pollinators.
The month of April also brings with it the illumination of the Full Pink Moon, named so for the budding of flowers around this time of year—specifically creeping phlox, which is especially prevalent during this time of year and is quite pink in color—and not because the moon turns pink. Speaking of flowers, April’s birth flowers include the daisy and the sweet pea, and for those of you born in this month, you will be dazzled to know that the diamond is your birthstone. I also want to wish a very Happy Birthday to those of you celebrating one this month! I hope you have an incredible time!
In closing, I hope that this month brings joy and happiness to you all. May the spring treat you kindly, and may you have good weather for the days when you plan on going out and doing things. I hope that you take your time through each day and enjoy living your life to the fullest each and every day. Remember to breathe and to let go of the things that you cannot control. Release all of the stress and anxiety that you might have, and embrace the new month with a positive mindset. You’re almost halfway through 2024! You got this!
That’s all for now, folks! Until next time!
