Happy Earth Day, everyone! Today is a great day to get out in nature and to appreciate the world that we live in, although it could be a tad warmer in my opinion. Earth Day has been around since it was first introduced fifty-four years ago, on April 22nd, 1970. Earth Day is a time to bring awareness to the issues around us, such as pollution, endangered animals, the use of pesticides, and clean drinking water. It’s also a time to plant trees, clean up litter, or simply spend time in nature.
I have a question for y’all: How much of the plastic we throw away every day is recycled? The answer might shock all of you hard-core recyclers out there: Only 9%. Food waste is similar, with about 20% of food never being eaten simply because it looks less-than-perfect. It’s absolutely crazy the amount of food that is being wasted and the amount of plastic being recycled.
The thing with plastics that you have to remember is that they can only be recycled so many times before they can’t be recycled again due to material degradation; they will eventually end up in a landfill or our oceans, lakes, or rivers, regardless of whether or not we recycle them. Glass, on the other hand, can be recycled endlessly with no loss in quality, so when you’re thinking about switching out the plastic in your life, consider glass to be your first option.
Aluminum is another great option when it comes to sustainability and recyclability. Aluminum can also be recycled endlessly without degrading over time. Paper, glass and aluminum are all great things to recycle! When it comes to plastic, however, I’m afraid we can’t say the same. Many types of plastic are labeled as recyclable when they are not, which can pose many problems when you’re trying to recycle them, especially since recycling plastic takes far more energy than recycling glass does. Trying to avoid using plastic altogether is the best option when it comes to living a sustainable life, but we can’t always avoid it; it’s convenient and easy to use. The thing is that we don’t need a few people going zero-plastic perfectly; we need a thousand people going zero-plastic imperfectly.
Earth Day is the perfect time to think about the ways in which you can live more eco-friendly, and the things that you can do to help the planet out. Do your own research, check out some eco-friendly shops, switch out that plastic water bottle for a reusable one, cook homemade meals, clean up litter, grow your own food, and plant some flowers for the bees. One small step a day can do a world of a difference.
